Hey all! I hope you guys are surviving OK in the US - the snow there looks horrible. I'm glad I'm down here, are you all jealous?? You should be. It's been 78 and breezy all week.

Things down here have been awesome, as usual. We went to the Poás Volcano last Friday, which was really fun - it was insane; the clouds rolled in and out so fast that the crater could be completely clear one second and within literally 5 seconds, you were in the middle of a fog bank. Here are a few pictures, and a video so you can see how fast the clouds were moving and how windy it was.

So we went to the crater and then hiked a little bit through the trails; it was steep, and jesus christ am I getting out of shape. I can't wait to hear back from the local barn so I can get back to work. Lord knows I need something to do!!

So then after the volcano, Tatiana and Katie and I went shopping in San Jose - our first solo trip!! I don't have pictures because I sure as hell wasn't bringing my nice camera into san jose. But we made it there OK and didn't die!! And I got two nice tops to wear to clubs for under 20 bucks. LOVE cheap clothes. Midget, if you're reading this, we're going shopping in San Jose when you come visit. Bring money.

Saturday night we went to Nati's birthday party - it was tons of fun, and her relatives are al batshit crazy in the most fun of ways. We danced a ton, and I had a really good time overall. Here are some photos, of course!!

Nothing really else exciting has gone on. We have an awesome trip coming up to the beach, in which I of course am going to be on horseback as much as humanly possible. Once on Friday and once on Saturday - I'll keep you guys updated on how that goes!! We're going to a beach on the Pacific, where there are a lot of gorgeous waterfalls, islands, cliffs, and snorkeling. I'm going to get burned to a crisp!!

Also, I'm planing my Spring Break trip, which is going to be insanely expensive because of all of the horseback riding I'm doing. At least three times, probably four. BUT here are the other activities I'm planning on doing: Night walk through the forest to see the sloths, frog pond, butterfly garden, hummingbird garden, bat habitat, and maybe ziplining. I think I'm going to be gone for 6 days and I think my host mom is coming along too, which is fine by me - it will be nice to not be by myself, and she doesn't ride which means that I'll get that as some alone time.

So that's basically it - though I do want to show you guys the AWESOME NEW FRIENDS I've made here so far.

Hola a todos! Espero que están sobreviviendo en los EEUU - la nieve se ve horrible. Que bueno que esté aquí, están celosos?? Deben estar. Ha sido 78 F y con viento toda la semana.

Aquí lo paso bien, como siempre. Fuimos al Volcán Poás el viernes pasado, y fue muy divertido - muy loco, porque los nubes se fueron tan rápido que el crater podía estar completamente claro un segundo, y al siguente no podía ver nada por los nubes. Tengo unos videos para que puedan ver!

Bueno, fuimos al crater y entonces caminamos por los senderos. Dios mio estoy gorda. Espero la respuesta del establo local para que pueda volver a trabajar. Necesito algo que hacer!!

Después de ir al volcán, Tatiana y Katie y yo fuimis a compras en San Jose - nuestra primera viaje solas!! No tengo fotos porque no quería llevar mi camera a la ciudad, pero se fue muy bien y compré dos camisas para llevar a las discotecas por menos de 20 dólares. Me encanta la ropa barata.

Sábado por la noche fuimos a los cumpleaños de Nati en su casa - muy divertido, y sus relaciones son completamente locos en una manera muy bueno. Bailamos mucho, y me disfruté tanto.

Nada más ha pasado. Tenemos una viaje para las Islas Tortugas, y voy a cabalgar tanto. Una vez el viernes, y otra vez el sábado. Vamos a la playa en el Pacifico, dónde hay muchas cataratas lindas, islas, y snorkeling. Voy a quemar!

También estoy planeando mis vacaciones de Semana Santa, que va a costar mucho porque voy a cabalgar tanto. A menos tres veces, y probablemente cuatro. Pero aquí son las otras actividades que voy a hacer - un tour de la selva por la noche para ver a las animales, un laguito de ranas, jardín de mariposas y hummingbirds, el habitat de murciélagos, y quizás ziplining. Me quedaré allá por 6 días, y creo que Bernadita va a acompañarme también - estará bueno que no ando sola, y no cabalga, así tengo tiempo para mí.

Basicamente es todo - pero mire a mis amigos nuevos.

Classes and excursions

Hey everyone, I know it's been a long time since I updated so here's another post for you!!

So I've been here for about 3 weeks now and am still having fun. Classes so far have been OK - I had to switch some of my classes, because the linguistics classes I signed up for were wayyyy too difficult. So now I'm in Spanish, Basic Math, Public Speaking, and Written Com. I LOVE all of my teachers so far, and even though I'm missing out on Huber for the first time in 5 semesters, I think I'll survive.

It's weird not being at UMW this semester, too. It's weird not being able to pop over to Erica's room or head over to Sylvia's house or drive down to spend the night with the girl. That's been especially hard since she just had surgery, but I think she's doing OK so far. Hopefully I can call her soon. I definitely miss being there with everyone, but I have enough to do here to keep me occupied. Johan and Nati (my host brother and his girlfriend) have been absolutely amazing. We went to a giant party in Palmares last Sunday - apparently every province has a giant party that lasts just over two weeks once a year, with concerts and a tope - traditional parade on horseback. I'm determined to see one of those before I leave! So we went to that, where I did NOT get sunburned because I'm psychotic about sunblock. It sucks because my face is breaking out like i'm 13 again, but if I have to choose between breaking out now and cancer and wrinkles later, I'm definitely thinking in the long term.

Today my host brother Johan and his girlfriend Nati and I went to Volcán Irazu, which was about an hour by car but was really pretty! I think I've figured out finally how to post pictures, so here are a few - it was gorgeous. There were cows just kind of chilling in the road on the way there, which was strange and kind of awesome. Also, there was a seriously entertaining raccoon-thing on the table in the entrance area, of course chilling under a sign that says DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS. Here are a few more pics:

I love Johan and Nati so much, and it really helps that they include me in so much - it's a lot of fun to hang out with people around my age (well, sort of - they're about 28ish I think). Then later Katie came over to hang out for a while, just sitting on the front patio area and hanging out. It's a lot of fun.

They tell us at UMW that there will be a 2 week 'honeymoon' phase where you think that your new country is SUPERAWESOME and are super hyped about it. Then, they say, there are another 2 weeks where you hate it and want to go back home and after that everything settles down again. However, I've been here for 3 weeks now and haven't had any problems so far. There have been a few things to adjust to - the strangest so far being no ketchup at the school cafeteria, showerheads that heat the water where it comes out (only one knob in the shower!), and eating mayo on salads. But everything has been OK so far, and my spanish is still holding up well. I'm very glad that I was already at a fairly advanced level before I came here, because otherwise I would have problems.

So that's about it.....though I just want to mention that right now my host mother is outside washing the parrots with a hose. Just sayin.

Hola a todos! Sé que no he escrito por mucho tiempo, pero aquí está algo para uds!

Hace 3 semanas que estoy aquí, y todavía me disfruto mucho. Clases hasta ahora me pasan bien - aunque tuve que cambiar unas clases porque las de linguísticas que tenía fueron demasiados avanzados. Por eso ahora tengo clases de español, Mathematica Básica, Oratoria, y Comunicación Escrita. Me encantan todos de mis profesores, y aunque no tenga clases con la Dra Huber por la primera vez en casi 3 años, creo que voy a sobrevivir.

Es raro no estar en UMW este semestre también. Es extraño no poder visitar con Erica o andar a la casa de Sylvia o andar en coche para pasar la noche con la novia. Esto especialmente me cae duro porque acaba de tener una operación, pero creo que está bien. Espero que la pueda llamar pronto. Extraño a todos, pero tengo mucho que hacer para ocuparme. Johan y Nati (mi hermano y su novia) han sido absolutamente increíbles. Fuimos a una gran fiesta en Palmares el fin de semana pasado - parece que todas las provincias en Costa Rica tengan una fiesta grande que dura más de 2 semanas, con conciertos y un tope, una desfile tradicionál con caballos. Quiero ver un tope antes de salir. Bueno, fuimos a Palmares, y NO me quemé del sol porque estoy neurotica con el bloqueador. Es puta madre porque mi piel tiene acne como si tuviera 13 años de nuevo, pero si tengo que elegir entre acne ahora y cancer mas tarde, pienso en el tarde.

Hoy fuimos (mi hermano aquí Johan, su novia Nati y yo) al Volcán Irazu, que tuvo como una hora en coche pero fue muy lindo. Creo que finalmente sé como poner fotos aquí, así aquí están unas. Fue lindísimo. Hubo vacas que andaban por la calle, que era raro. Y también hubo un animal muy chistoso encima de la mesa, y por supesto se quedó bajo de el letrero de no alimentar los animales. Y vea arriba para ver las fotos!! ^^^^^

Entonces fuimos a un hospital abandonado. No era muy espeluznante porque había tanto sol. Quizás me daría más miedo si regrese por la noche.

Me encantan Johan y Nati tanto, y me ayuda tanto que me inviten a pasar tiempo con ellos - es muy divertido pasar tiempo con personas de edad similar (pues, casi similar - tienen unos años más que yo). Más tarde, Katie vino a visitar por un rato, y sentamos afuera y pasamos tiempo hablando. Muy divertido.

Nos decimos en UMW que habrá un tiempo de 2 semanas de 'luna de miel' en que estará super emocionante sobre el estar allí, y entonces dicen que habrán dos semanas más en que extrañará su país, querrá regresar, etc, y después todo será normal. Pero hace 3 semanas que estoy aquí y estoy bien, no he tenido problemas. Han pasado unas cosas extraños - unos son que no hay ketchup en la escuela, que en la ducha el agua es calentado por el cabezal de la ducha. Y también comen mayonesa en las ensaladas. Pero todo me pasa bien, y mi español funciona bien, gracias a dios! Me siento aliviado que cuando llegué, ya sabía tanto español, porque si no supiera tanto español, tendría problemas.

Bueno, eso es todo....aunque quiero decirles que ahorita mi mamá aquí está bañando los loros afuara con la manguera.

Y LA QUINTA ESTACIÓN EN 3 SEMANAS. Si no sabe quiénes son, qué verguenza!!

Adventures in the canopy

Adventures in the canopy

So this weekend was our first big excursion with the group. There are 3 other girls here with the program now, Christi, Adrienne, and Katie. They're all really nice and we get along well - Katie's the only one who's staying until the end of the semester; the other two are going back this coming Saturday.

We started off with a 3 hour car trip to the volcano, which consisted of some really winding and reeeeally sketch roads. But we made it there OK, and started off with a hike down to the waterfall. That wouldn't have been so bad, if it weren't for the stairs of DEATH. It was like a half hour hike down the side of the mountain, over some very steep, broken, uneven stairs. And a rock scramble where the stairs had degraded. So that was horrible, as was the hike back up - but the waterfall itself was very pretty. Janiva (the program director) and the other three went swimming in the waterfall pool, but I declined because it was extremely frigid. We hung out there for maybe 40 minutes or so, and then started the loonnnngggg hike back up. We went back to the hotel and napped for a little bit, then went to the hot springs which were the best thing EVAR. You guys know how cold I always am....now picture me sitting in 115 degree water for two hours. Bliss.

The day wasn't perfect because I was a little sick - I think it was from eating so much on friday. Janiva had taken me and Katie into the city and around to a bunch of markets. We tried a bunch of fresh fruit, and a bunch of food from a cafe. Then we had the cooking class in the afternoon, so I think my system wa a bit upset. But the hot springs helped, and I felt a LOT better today.

We started off the day with bungee jumping.....just Christi and I did it, and omg. Terrifying, especially those first five seconds where you step off the platform. But I only hesitated for like......five seconds or so, which wasn't bad!!! Though they LIED. There was this deep pool of water at the bottom, n case the cord snaps I guess. And they give you the option to have just your hands skim the water or have your whole upper body dunked in. I asked to just skim the water, and it's not hard to guess what happened......sonofabitch. Hahahah. But the jump itself was very exhilarating, and I would probably do it again. So brittany keyes, we're even now, and the stakes must be raised!!

In the afternoon we had ziplining, which was of course fun as always. There were a lot of lines, and in the middle we had the tarzan swing - basically, you're up on a platform maybe 20ft or so above the ground, and jump off - the rope takes up the slack, and you swing really high up. Again, SCARY but awesome.

So that's basically been it so far - I start classes tomorrow, which will be interesting because I'll be completely lost for the first few days. But it'll be nice to have something to do, and Janiva is looking for a barn for me to volunteer at. Hopefully she finds something because if not, I'll go nuts!! I think that's the hardest part so far - not having anything to do during the day. I think my host mother doesn't like so much when I go out at night, because in that indirect-tico-way she keeps saying how nice it is to have people over, how she and everyone like to stay in and watch movies, etc etc. And I understand where she's coming from, since I am her responsibility for the next couple of months. But I'm still planning on going out on occasion, and hopefully will continue to have a great time here. I still miss everyone, so leave me lots of comments either here or on fbook!!

Aventuras en el canopy!

Este fin de semana fue nuestra primera excursión grande con todas las personas en nuestro grupo. Hey 3 muchachas más en el programa, Christie, Adrienne, y Katie. Todas son amables y me caen bien - Katie es la única que queda durante el semestre entero, y las otras van a regresar el sábado.

Empezamos con un viaje de 3 horas por carro para el volcán, que consiste en unos calles muy estrechos y sinuosos. Pero llegamos bien, y empezamos con un camiono para la catarata. No habría estado tan mal si no fuera por las escaleras fatales. Fue como media hora en bajar la montaña, por las escaleras muy empinados y rotos. Y también una subida por unas rocas donde habían caido las escaleras. Así que fue horrible, como el subir de nuevo para la entrada - pero la catarata fue muy linda. Janiva, nuestra directora, y las otras nadaron sobre la catarata, pero yo, no - fue demasiado frio. Nos quedamos allí por mas o menos 40 minutos, y entonces empezamos el viaje para la entrada. Fuimos al hotel y descnsamos un poco, y entonces fuimos a las manantiales termales (hot springs) que fueron lo mejor del mundo. Saben cuanto frío que siempre tengo......y ve que estoy en agua de 115 grados F. Pura dicha.

El día no era perfecto porque me puse un poco enfermo - creo que era por comer tanto el viernes. Janiva nos llevó al mercado, y probamos mucha comida nueva, y también un clase de cocinar en el tarde. Pero ahora estoy mucho mejor.

El domingo, empezamos con bungee......solo Christie y yo lo hicimos, y dios mío. Muy aterrador, especialmente los primeros 5 segundos cuando sale de la plataforma. Pero solo vacilé por como 5 segundos, que no fue muy mal! Aunque me mentieron! Hubo una piscina, en caso de que no funcione el bungee. Y tiene la opción de poner solo sus manos o su cuerpo hasta su cinturón bajo del agua. Elegí solo mis manos, y adivina que.....puta madre. Pero el tirar fue muy emocionante, y probablemente lo haría otra vez.

En el tarde tuvimos la tirolina (zipline) en que viajamos por el canopy - fue muy divertido, como siempre. Hubo muchas cuerdas, y después de ocho tuvimos el 'tarzan swing'. Muy temeroso, pero divertido.

Basicamente es todo - empiezo las clases mañana, que será interesante porque voy a estar perdida por unas días. Pero me gustaría tener algo que hacer, y Janiva busca un establo en que puedo trabajar. Creo que es lo más difícil - a no tener nada que hacer durante los días.

No voy a tracudir lo que queda porque estoy perezosa.....pero extraño a todos, y déjame comentarios aquí o en facebook!

I'm finally back at the house - I guess I should call it home, since this is where I'll be living for the next few months. I've had a busy few days, so I'll tell you guys all about it.

My mom and I got into San Jose at about 1030, and finally left the airport a little after 11 after getting our bags and going through customs. Janiva, the program director, picked us up and took us back to the house. Here are some pictures - my room and the second student room (currently empty) where my mom stayed. We weren't there for long though, because the next morning we had a bus adventure to go a couple hours north to the rainforest.

We got there OK, navigated the bus and taxi OK, and went to the Tirimbina lodge - it was wonderful. They were really helpful in organising activities. The first night we did the bat activity; there was a little lecture on bats and their conservation, and we saw the mist nets they use to catch them. Then a couple of the rangers brought in two of the bats that they had caught so far that night.....boy were they pissed. But it was cool to see them and touch them a little bit.

The next day we got up and went horseback riding, which I of course loved. It was very different from your typical riding tours here - no helmet or safety talks or anything; they just plopped us onto a couple of horses and took off. We were fording rivers and scrambling over rocks and knee-deep in mud....it was fun though. And thankfully there were two guides, so one of the guides and I could trot ahead a little faster while my mom and the second guide walked behind. We saw lottttts of cows, and herons, and spider monkeys.

That afternoon we did rafting, which was a lot of fun. It started raining halfway through, so I was glad that we were already wet. We saw a ton of birds, and even a couple of toucans. Then later that night we did ziplining, which turned out to be somewhat of a disaster. They had told us that it would be OK for my mom, who has a lot of trouble walking. However, turns out that there were tons of stairs and long hikes, so it wasn't so easy. But at least I had a good time.

We ended up taking private transportation back to Heredia, and hung out at the mall a little bit before coming back home. I needed a purse and a dictionary, so we bought both. Then back here for dinner, then bedtime.

My mom left today, which was kinda hard, but I think I'll be OK. The family here is really sweet. It's mostly the mother, Bernadita, who I interact with - she's home all of the time, whereas her son goes to classes and her husband works odd hours at the airport. Her son, Johan, is 29 (?) and really sweet. He's learning English, so maybe I can sneak some in to help him practise. Her husband is also very nice, though I don't see much of him - he works such long and odd hours at the airport that when he's home, he's sleeping most of the time.

So far the Spanish is working out really well; it's not nearly as bad as I feared. I can definitely communicate what I want to say, and understand probably 80% of everything going on - more if people are talking directly to me. So I'm definitely getting by, and I'm sure I'll be fluent inside of 3 weeks.

Anyways. I have to get up really early tomorrow, so I'm headed out - we're doing the Heredia tour, then a cooking class, and then I think Kristi and I are going to spend the afternoon and evening together tomorrow. It's so nice to have someone fun to hang out with, and I'm sad that she's only going to be here through next Saturday!! Then this weekend we have a volcano tour, an excursion into the mountains, and bungee jumping. Can we say HELLZ YES?

Finalmente estoy en la casa de nuevo - supongo que debo llarmarla 'home' porque voy a vivir aquí por 4 meses. He tenido unas días muy ocupados.

Mi madre y yo llegamos en San Jose como 1030pm, y finalmente salimos del aeropuerto acerca de las 11 después de recoger las maletas y ir por aduanas. Janiva, la directora, nos buscó y nos trajó a la casa. No nos quedamos por mucho tiempo porque la mañana siguente, salimos por bus para la selva.

El viaje nos pasó bien, y fuimos a la reserva Tirimbina en Saripiquí, y fue maravillosa. Los empleos allí fueron muy amables y nos ayudaron en organizar las actividades. La primera noche hicimos una actividad con los murciélagos, con una lección sobre ellos y vimos el red en lo que los cazan. Entonces unos de los guardas forestales trajeron dos murciélagos....y qué enojados estaban. Pero qué chiva verlos y tocarlos.

El día siguente, nos levantamos y cabalgamos, que por supesto me encantó. Fue muy diferente de los EEUU - no hubo cascos o discurso sobre la seguridad, solamente nos pusieron encima de los caballos y nos fuimos. Cruzamos ríos y encima de muchas piedras y lodo.....fue muy divertido. Y hubo dos guías, así pude andar adelante más rapidamente con mi guía mientras mi mamá andaba atrás. Vimos muchas vacas, y aves, y monos.

En la tarde hicimos rafting, que también fue muy divertido. Empezó a llover en la mitad del viaje, y me agradecí que ya estábamos mojados. Vimos muchos aves, hasta tucanes. Más tarde hicimos zipline, que resultó en ser un poco desastre. Nos dijimos que no sería dificil para mi mamá - para ella, es muy difícil andar. Y hubo un montón de escaleras y caminatas largas - no fue fácil. Pero a menos me disfruté.

Resulta que tuvimos transportación privada para Heredia, y quedamos un rato en el mall antes de regresar a casa. Necesité una bolsa y un diccionario, y compramos los dos. Entonces para acá para comer y dormir.

Mi madre se fue hoy, que era duro, pero creo que estaré bien. La familia aquí es muy amable. Generalmente mis interacciones son con la madre Bernadita - siempre está en casa, y su hijo y su esposo tienen trabajo. Johan, su hijo, tiene 29 años y está aprediendo inglés - tal vez puedo hablar un poco en inglés con él! Su esposo también es muy abable, pero no nos vemos mucho porque siempre trabaja horas raras en el aeropuerto y cuando está en casa, duerme mucho.

Hasta ahora mi español me sirve muy bien, y no es tan duro como temía. Puedo comunicar lo que quiero decir, y entiendo como 80% de lo que pasa, más si las personas me hablan directamente. Estoy segura que hablaré con fluidez dentro de unas semanas.

Bueno. Tengo que levantarme muy temprano, así me voy - vamos en un tour de Heredia, y entonces un clase de cocinar, y entonces Kristi y yo andamos juntas en la tarde y la noche. Me gusta mucho tener una chica con quien puedo pasar un rato, y me hace triste que solamente se quede aquí hasta el sábado! Y este fin de semana tenemos un tour del volcán Arenal, y caminar en las montañas, y bungee. Yayy!!

Viajando

It's almost 6pm and I'm in the Atlanta airport. I have to wait about another hour to board the plane, and from there I only have 4 hours left. I can't wait to get to where it's warm. I think that in DC this morning when we left, it was about 24 degrees outside. Not good.

But I only wanted to tell you guys that I'm very happy to be on the way at last, and that I'll update you all on everything about my new home when I get there!

Son casi las 6 por la noche y estoy en el aeroperto en Atlanta. Tengo que esperar una hora más hasta que pueda embarcar el avión, y de alli solamente quedan 4 horas. Me muero de ganas de estar en un lugar caliente. Creo que en DC cuando mi madre y yo salimos hoy, era sólo de 24 grados Fahrenheit. No bueno.

Pero solamente quise decirles que estoy muy feliz de estar viajando finalmente, y que les voy a decir todo sobre mi casa nueva cuando llega!

Bienvenida a mi blog!

Hey all, welcome to my new weblog! So this will be a chronicle of my Excellent Adventures in Costa Rica for the coming semester. I'm going with the SOL Education Abroad program to Heredia, a historic town north of San Jose. I'm leaving Jan 3rd and will be back on April 25th.

It's hard to believe I will be leaving in 12 days - I haven't even started packing, and I only have a few days left to try and see people before I leave. I'm still a bit nervous about going down, but I know I'll have a fantastic time. We'll be doing a lot of the activities; I want to do the Bat Activity! So I can't wait to go and do all that. She'll also get the chance to meet and stay with the host family for a couple of days before she flies back to the US when the program starts.

So anyways. I'll miss everyone but am looking forward to going! I'll keep you all updated!

Hola a todos, y bienvenidos a mi nueva weblog! Esta va a ser una crónica de mis Aventuras Excelentes en Costa Rica en el próximo semestre. Viajo con el programa de SOL Education Abroad a la ciudad de Heredia, un pueblo al norte de San Jose. Me voy el 3 de enero y regreso al 25 de abril.

Es difícil creer que me voy en 12 días - no he empezado de hacer mis maletas, y solamente quedan unos días para visitar con mis amigas antes de salir. Todavía estoy nerviosa sobre el ir a un país diferente, pero sé que voy a disfrutarme mucho. Mi anfitriona debe ser muy amable y simpática - si quieren ver sobre mi casa allí, mi director del programa tiene un album de Picasa:

Vamos a hacer muchas actividades; quiero hacer la actividad con los murcélagos! Me muero de ganas de ir y hacer todo esto. Mi madre también tiene la oportunidad de conocer a mi familia aquí por unos días antes de regresar a los Estados Unidos al comienzo del programa.
